EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE AT ST AIDAN'S

Welcome to Our EYFS page. We are proud of our Reception pupils and the children very quickly become part of the St. Aidan’s family. One of the many special things about being a St. Aidan’s pupil is our Reception and Year 6 reading partners. The children receive a year 6 reading partner when they start at school and their reading partners help them settle into school. This truly fosters a love for reading and ensures a happy transition into Reception class.

INTENT

St Aidan’s School believes that all children deserve an education rich in memorable experiences that allows our children’s creativity and curiosity to grow, alongside the development of key skills and knowledge. We believe that offering our children a strong foundation and a love of learning gives children the best chance to become well-rounded, happy individuals, ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.

It is our intention to provide our children with the building blocks where all children can work with adults and peers in a climate of mutual respect to develop confidence in their ability to learn. We aim to provide children with a well-structured, safe and active learning environment. This will enable our young learners to develop the skills, attitudes and understanding that support our children to become lifelong learners and encourage them to become active members of our ever-changing society.

As well as this, we create active St. Aidan’s Citizens, who want to make a positive impact on our world, and become Guardians of our Planet. Our curriculum is therefore the cultural capital we know our pupils need so that they can be successful.

Our children learn through Play and Exploration, Active Learning and Creative and Critical Thinking. During the first year of school in Reception, children follow the Foundation Stage curriculum which covers seven key areas. The Prime Areas are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The Specific Areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our broad and balanced curriculum, following the EYFS curriculum, is designed to allow children to know more, understand more, and remember more. We impart a wealth of knowledge, and they give knowledge to each other. Our curriculum allows for coverage, revisiting and application of key knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills.  One that encourages communication, thinking, exploration, investigation, cultural awareness, creativity and imagination. Our curriculum enhances experiences and creates memorable, first-hand experiences. We provide the space for our children to be creative, to make choices, to think and reflect, to promote challenge and problem whilst developing their vocab.

Our staff go above and beyond to get to know all children on an individual basis, which supports us in tailoring the learning to them personally, creating engagement and challenge for all children, whilst helping children to set and reflect on their own goals by aiming high. We begin the school year by celebrating what makes us unique. We develop a love of reading, writing and number, which is delivered through a holistic curriculum, maximising opportunities for meaningful cross curricular links and learning experiences, as well as promoting the unique child by offering extended periods of play and sustained thinking following children’s interests and ideas. It is imperative that from the beginning of life in Reception, we develop the children’s emotional literacy through Zones of Regulation, and support the children in managing their emotions.

IMPLEMENTATION

We recognise that children will learn most effectively when they are healthy, safe and secure, when their individual needs are met and when they have positive relationships with adults who care for them. We aim to provide a setting that encompasses a safe and stimulating environment where children are able to enjoy learning and grow in confidence that helps them to achieve their potential.

In Early Years we begin with a strong emphasis on intentional teaching sessions and adult led activities to build the foundation of the children’s learning skills and knowledge and understanding the curriculum, so that they can apply this learning to child-initiated activities through continuous provision.

Our adults communicate and model language, they show, explain, demonstrate, explore ideas, encourage, question, recall, provide a narrative for what they or the children are doing, facilitate and challenge. Through observation and questioning, we are able to continuously assess, and therefore identify next steps in learning, and partnered with carefully planned activities, it gives us the right balance of challenge and support to move learning forward, whilst maintaining confidence and self-belief. Language development is vital to enable each child to access the whole curriculum and is done so throughout play in the environment and short structured sessions that are dedicated to the teaching of Phonics, Literacy, Communication and Language and Reading, as well as other areas of the EYFS curriculum.

The curriculum is planned and implemented through a thematic approach. This approach gives children the opportunities to apply their learning across the curriculum and that gives their work practical context and also opportunities to apply knowledge and skills through a variety of learning opportunities. Topics are introduced to our children in a creative way, half termly. Learning then develops through a series of lessons that build skills, knowledge and understanding within that topic of learning. At the end of each topic, children are given the opportunity to evaluate and celebrate their learning.

Throughout Reception our children are assessed in relation to their progress towards Development Matters and the Early Learning Goals. These judgements are made on the basis of observations and in-depth knowledge of the children acquired through ongoing assessments.  Next steps are fostered during continuous provision and adult led activities to ensure children are challenged. End of year assessments are finalised during the summer term, summarising each child’s development at that point against the Early Learning Goals and Development Matters.

IMPACT

Our children will be actively engaged in their learning and the enjoyment of this learning will be apparent in their daily provision. All children will have experienced a curriculum that provides exciting and enriching learning experiences and opportunities for them to learn through educational visits and practical experiences.

Our young learners will be able to appreciate and understand the world around them by experiencing and learning about different cultures, celebrations, music, dance, art and history. Children will actively ask questions about the world around them and learning experiences.

We also aim to help children to make sense of the world around them. Our early years children will be successful learners and fully prepared for the next stage of their education as they transition from Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage One.

By the end of Foundation Stage our children will have developed the essential knowledge and skills required for everyday life and lifelong learning. We believe the children at St Aidan’s will be happy, inquisitive and successful learnings who have bright futures.

Children here at St Aidan’s absolutely LOVE learning, and we are very proud to have created that. They have a positive attitude towards learning, are inquisitive and are confident and comfortable when taking risks. We are committed to giving our children the best possible start to their school life, and will provide an education of such quality that every child will leave the school with better life chances than when they first started, children who are happy and enjoy coming to school, and are excited about the possibilities of tomorrow.
