History at St Aidan’s.

At St Aidan’s we are dedicated to nurturing curious and enthusiastic historians who possess a strong foundation of knowledge and the investigative skills necessary to deepen their understanding of the past. We achieve this by fostering a sense of curiosity in children about the history of Britain and the wider world through a diverse range of approaches. To ensure lessons are both practical and engaging, we provide immersive historical experiences by enabling children to examine authentic artefacts in the classroom, explore historic sites during education visits and learn from specialist guest speakers.

In Reception, children develop their understanding of the world by discussing all about themselves, their own history, their homes and people who help us. They use role play to develop their curiosity and begin to make simple similarities and differences between things in the past and now. They begin to develop a sense of chronology by building a Reception class timeline.

In Years 1 and 2 children are expected to express their knowledge of the past using a range of words and phrases related to the passing of time. They discuss changes that have happened within and beyond their living memory and discover which significant individuals from the past have influenced their lives today such as The Wright Brothers and Queen Victoria. Year 1 explore the toy museum, while Year 2 return to 1666 to witness the City of London become ablaze.

During Years 3 and 4 the children are exposed to a wider range of historical terms such as ‘pre-historic’, ‘empire’ and ‘artefact’. They are encouraged to devise their own questions about the past and are provided with a range of primary and secondary sources to support their understanding. Year 3 learn about the differences between nomads of the Stone Age to the settlers of the Iron Age and Year 4 become enthralled by the discovery of the Ancient Egyptian and Roman ways of life.

In Year 5 and 6 the children are expected to become more independent in their ability to ask and answer questions about the past. Using primary and secondary sources, they form and articulate opinions about democracy in Ancient Greece and the treatment of evacuees during the Second World War.

Our History Curriculum days allow the children to become fully immersed in a theme or topic to experience life in role as a person from that era. We have covered sources of evidence from WW2, History of Music through the decades, Stone Age Day, Greek Day, Egyptian Day and many more.

At St. Aidan’s, History is thoughtfully interwoven throughout our curriculum, providing children with diverse opportunities to explore and demonstrate their historical understanding. From creating prehistoric pottery in Year 3 to composing original myths and legends in Year 5, pupils engage with the past through a rich variety of creative and academic methods. There are also numerous opportunities for pupils to extend their historical research at home and to share their findings with their peers, fostering a collaborative learning environment. We are deeply committed to nurturing a lifelong passion for history, encouraging children to make meaningful connections between the past and the present. In doing so, we aim to inspire them to draw lessons from history that will inform and influence their understanding of the world and their role within it.
